Mid-side processing
The Fusion Stereo Image plug-in works in the mid-side domain. Essentially, mid-side processing is a way of encoding a stereo signal that splits the centre and width information into mid and side signals respectively. Once encoded, the width and focus of any stereo signal can be manipulated by altering the volume balance between the mid and side signals.
Mid-side processing is useful in music production because you want to ensure the clarity of your central focus. Thus, Fusion Stereo Image only processes the side signal with a technique called stereo shuffling. Stereo shuffling uses EQ to modify the side signal's lower frequencies, and in doing so balances the overall signal. By reducing low and low-mid frequencies, the centre signal becomes more focused. Alternatively, by increasing the lower frequencies, the centre signal becomes wides and more diffused.
Control
Take hands-on control of Fusion's stereo shuffling with Shuffle and Space controls. Shuffle and Space are, for all intents and purposes, frequency and cut/boost controls of an EQ band that gives you control over exactly how focused or diffused the resulting signal will be. More precisely, Space broadly boosts or cuts bass frequencies based on the stereo shuffling technique and Shuffle changes the cut-off frequency for the Space control.
Once the signal has been processed through Space and Shuffle, a Width control allows you to widen or narrow the stereo image by applying gain to the side signal. Finally, everything is encoded back into a standard left-right stereo signal.
Vector scope
To demonstrate the stereo image of your signal SSL has included a highly visual vector scope to graph out Shuffle, Space and Width. The central polar sample plot lets you visualise the stereo image of the incoming signal. As you adjust Shuffle, Space, and Width, you will see the signal become wider or more narrow. For advanced stereo plotting, samples appearing within the 45-degree lines indicate that they are in phase.
