Versatile Outboard Equalisation

The Lil Freq Equalizer from Empirical Labs is a comprehensive equalisation unit, combining a wide range of equalisation and processing tools for maximum efficiency. The Lil Freq is the culmination of various sculpting tools, combined to create this all-in-one EQ unit. The Lil Freq offers eight sections of processing in total, as well as a master bypass. Each of the eight sections features their own dedicated bypass switch, allowing you to compare between A/B sounds.

High Pass Filtering

The comprehensive control section features an ergonomic layout with a wide range of controls. The High Pass section is comprised of a sharp high pass filter, cutting out content below a selected frequency. It boasts eight preset frequencies ranging from 30Hz – 330Hz. The steep filter features a special shape designed to prevent frequencies from dissipating above the cutoff point. The up/down buttons allow you to select the corner frequency. The LEDs provide visual indication for when the section is bypassed or engaged.

High/Low Shelving Filters

Contrary to conventional audio processors, the high and low shelving controls have been optimised to provide a smooth yet musical boost and cut on both the high and low frequencies. Normally, they would act as bass and treble tone controls, whereas the Lil Freq delivers added precision and tonal accuracy.

Parametric EQ

The Lil Freq features four section of fully parametric equalisation including LF, Lo Mid, Hi Mid and HF sections. Each section includes its own separate gain control, bandwidth (Q) and controls for the frequency. The versatile and super-clean sound it provides operates below .0007 percent (Total Harmonic Distortion) even at higher volume levels. It can be useful for both vocals and instruments with its flexible controls and sweet-sounding EQ.

Dynamic EQ (DS)

The DS (Dynamic EQ) section provides one of the most natural sounding de-essers on the market. He powerful design fuses tunable filters with a compressor-style circuit, allowing you to control excessive HF content. It is ideal for treating sibilance or other sharp transient sounds. The versatile design means the dynamic EQ can also function as a soft-knee high frequency limiter, ideal for vocal EQing. The powerful tool has been used for years in the audio world for live performances and as a go-to EQ for lead vocals, percussion and bass.

Design & Connectivity

The robust all-metal chassis makes the Lil Freq Equalizer ideal for both studio and live applications. The ergonomic design features clearly annotated controls for quick and easy use. The retro-style design is reminiscent of vintage EQ units from the late 80s. The precision potentiometers and attenuators allow you to dial in your parameters with the utmost accuracy. It features a range of LEDs for indicating when an input is in use and for monitoring levels. The rack-mountable design can be used in both live and studio racks for added flexibility. The rear of the unit features both XLR and 1/4-inch I/O connectivity. Additionally, you can link together two units for stereo operation.
